Rubi Girl Dana Sintell with India Summer and Tara Misu

Dana takes her rightful place as RubiNewsDay's Woman of the Year!

For so many RubiFans, they have wondered, will Dana get her shout-out? Finally? ‘This just humbles me and I thank the RubiNewsday for the recognition. Look, at the end of the day, India and Tara (former WOTY) can tell you this as well, being a RubiGirl is all about having a servant’s heart! You kind of get addicted to helping people! On top of that entertaining them!!’ Sintell was instrumental in getting a state historical marker for Rubi, as well as setting a personal goal for TSMGO sponsorships…and beating it!! ‘I love to challenge myself. I love to pull the non-profit along with me. We can and we have done miracles!’ Sintell handles the 501c3 and is the Executive Director. ‘I love these RubiGirls. NO…REALLY….I love them. We are not perfect friends, or close to perfect people…but we are all PERFECT for fun-raising. We don’t take our roles lightly….but we do a great job of sharing our ‘light’ with others!’ Way to go DANA!!

RUBIFANS JUST LOVE CHERRY!

ENERGY! It is a defining part of any Rubi Show. One girl takes it to a whole new level…Cherry Poppins. Electric. Magnetic. Alluring. Cherry has that blend of great song choice, fantastic moves, and unending tricks up her sleeve. To boot, many call Cherry ‘America‘s Sweetheart.’ She’s kind, attentive and willing to got to bat for any cause, or any girl, at anytime. She is not only gracing the RubiStage, she performs around the state..all while residing in Columbus. From hosting, to hopping around a showbar, Cherry has been a great addition to a great group!

$6,000 RAISED AT DAYTON PRIDE

What a PRIDE the Girls have had. Minnie returned. The Show on St. Clair was a hit.

The Foundry affair was absolutely spectacular. MJ’s was a hoot, and many want more bar shows. Jackie and Taj brought laughs to the BLACK BOX. All totaled as of this writing, the GIRLS have almost hit $6000 in donations. These donations are earmarked for the GIVE FUND, SCHOLARSHIP and the LGBT CENTER!

BRAVO LADIES!!

Jackie is O So READY!

How did you find your way to Rubi, especially while winning pageants every where!

At the time, I was a friend of Taj, Candi Wantsome and Majestic (I think that’s how she spells it). Candi and Taj were in ‘The Show Must Go On’, in 2013. There I received what I know now to be a privilege to assist backstage. I didn’t get it at first. I camefrom bar drag, where you are given all of these standards and marks to hit to even get by being decent. More pressure. For me, drag has always been about fun first, I mean I am playing dress up so I can permit myself to be RIDICULOUS! If you’re not having fun with that why do it? So I have always lacked the competitive side of drag, I really do believe there is space for everyone to be amazing! So, when I found Rubi it didn’t make sense, not for a while, but what did was the sense of mister sisterhood. The working towards a common goal, the community connection, and general love for each other. It was several years later before I got into my first show, 2016…. I think… and from there the rest is Rubi history!

What makes it magic for you to be a Rubigirl?

Many things make RubiGirls magic! For starters, just the willingness to show up to everything we do! This stuff can really be work! And I’m just the entertainment! Our sense of family, and our willingness to always come together for what matters. The sense of connection between us and the community we serve. The community we serve is apart of that magic as well! We could not be these make shift celebrities that you all make us feel like we are…without you! Finally, the magic is also about the fun that we all have together at everything we do, in or out of drag. RubiGirls will live out loud wherever we go, and that gives permission for everyone around us to get a little more Rubi in there own way. We aren’t just showgirls, we are a 4D experience.

Does being a Rubi open doors in the community…How? Why? When? Where?

Becoming a RubiGirl marked a big turning point in my life! After joining the RubiGirls I was enlightened to a whole new side of Dayton, it made me fall in love with this city! Thru making new friends and being able to be bigger part of my community has allowed me to take drag to places I never thought I would go! I went from hopping from whatever bar would throw me $50 and a few drink tickets to professional level photoshoots, bar tending, being in a commercial, doing improv, being in a musical, having my own costume featured at the Dayton Art institute! Being able to host incredible community events, local businesses allowing me to throw my own small events, character impersonations for special events (even a birthday!), I got to play a major part for a couple of years in Yellow Springs Pride! And I have Rubi to thank for all of that, it has opened me up to the community in a way that honestly, I wasn’t sure that little old me deserved. I am forever grateful, and I hope I do the name proud everywhere my heels go!

You have seen a lot of change since joining…what stands out as a good part of the evolution of Rubi?

I think I’ve seen the number of people we reach grow and grow every year! Which for a small band of queens that’s incredible. I’ve seen the “level of polish” step it up in some ways, while still holding on to the rough around the edges we all love, although sometimes I prefer it just rough. I feel like we have found a really good rhythm here recently that’s bringing a new relaxed fun energy to the group, events have felt like a breeze!

What number do you love doing with girls…and do you have a fave solo number?

For me I love doing the RubiGirl Classics! While I am on stage for (Insert your favorite here) I can’t help but to think about how many different queens have done this before me, for me to be able to do it now and in probably in there costume! I even get to stand along side two of the people who started the whole thing! As for a solo number, really anything I do…….KIDDING! My favorite lately has been Rose’s Turn!

How can Rubi save the world?

At this point, in a time of everything being unprecedented, Rubi saves the world by continuing to live out loud and serve our community to our best capacity! I don’t believe any one grand gesture will save the world, but a series of small ones. Everyday in your own community, where you can touch the lives of people and watch that grow. I think we can all find ways to be a little Rubi all the time! In the words of my great grandmother when I would talk too much….

OH, THAT MAGIC MARKER!

‘Why?’ Was The Question that plagued so many after Trump’s decision to end the Ohio Historic Marker Program for LGBTQ+. For Rubi…a bigger question…why now? The Girls were one of 9 groups earmarked for a marker by year’s end. When the word came through, the end result seemed over and done. HOLD ON ONE MINUTE…for the Rubi Marker, Josh (Dana Sintell), had already completed the process and laid the groundwork for the location itself. At first, it appeared futile, but through info sharing, persistence and even a bit of nagging, Josh was able to move the needle forward, citing, these decisions were made previous to Trump’s decision and that, if even by supplementing the cost themselves, Rubi had a right to their marker (as did the other 8.) Thanks to the Ohio Historical Rep, Svetlana…the process worked. Once the language is finalized and the marker is put in place at the clubhouse..the drama will end…FINALLY & RIGHTFULLY!

Perfect Patio Party

A fantastic evening was had by all at the Neon Movies Patio Party. The featured group was none other than Rubi and the place was packed! The patio parties are A great way to see your friends and support the Neon Movies. Various dignitaries were there as well, and the beer was ICE COLD!!
